Leung Ka Kit

Leo Leung holds M.S. degrees in Biology and Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Genomics. He is a Research Assistant Professor at Polytechnic University conducting interdisciplinary research at the intersection of affective science, psychophysiology, and the arts, with a parallel focus on sustainable design—emphasizing technological translation and social impact. In the AI–art intersection, he leads a systematic research program addressing the lack of unified evaluation standards for portraiture and the inability of current AI models to accurately capture emotional content and stylistic nuance. The approach extracts objective visual features (e.g., color saturation, line complexity, compositional contrast) and employs machine learning to produce quantitative machine-based emotion perception and style-matching scores. A complementary web platform collects large-scale subjective data on visual appeal and emotional congruence, enabling a comparative framework of “objective features → machine scores → human perception” to inform standardized art-education assessment and digital content optimization. In sustainable design, his work tackles the high carbon footprint and poor emotional fit of conventional cultural-product manufacturing by upcycling spent coffee grounds into lightweight eco-composite materials. The research combines materials optimization with emotion-driven design (e.g., tactile qualities, coloration, packaging narratives) to create functional cultural products that address both environmental sustainability and user emotional needs.
