Chaklam Ng

Chaklam Ng is a Hong Kong-based sound artist and musical instrument inventor whose practice interrogates the phenomenology of sound-making itself. As founder of Oblik Soundwork, he works primarily through sound installations and invented musical instruments, treating each as an investigation into intention—both in the creation of sound and in the interfaces that produce it.

Trained in Communication Design, Chaklam's work operates at the intersection of observation and accident, where form deliberately refuses to follow function. Characterized by polished stainless steel and glass, his installations maintain a visual calmness that allows sonic elements to emerge as the primary experience. His instruments and interactive sound installations embrace what he calls “beautiful accidents”—moments where the expected relationship between gesture and sound dissolves, inviting participants to listen rather than merely hear. Drawing frequently from games and everyday objects, he harnesses familiar interactive mechanics and transforms them into unexpected soundscapes, converting everyday objects and generative systems into philosophical propositions about how we engage with musical interfaces.

Notable works include “The Interpreter,” a sound installation presented at Arts.Tech 2022, and "Pause Rec Play 2.0" at Clockenflap 2023. His recent hybrid instrument “The Club”—a collision of pinball machine and turntable—was featured at deTour 2024 and Design Trust Futures Festival 2025. Chaklam’s experimental approach to sound sculpture has garnered international attention in publications including Designboom, Dezeen, and NME magazine, where his work continues to challenge conventional notions of musicality embedded in everyday life.
